After Somaliland Refused Beijing's Millions, China Used Mogadishu to Close Its Skies

Somaliland turned down a Chinese offer of more than a quarter of a billion dollars to end its ties with Taiwan. Since then, writes former Pentagon official Michael Rubin in 19FortyFive, Beijing has pushed Somalia to claim control of Somaliland's airspace and to use eVisa rules to keep out Taiwanese and Israeli visitors. He calls it a campaign to isolate Hargeisa without firing a shot.

IMF: Aid cuts, drought and election tensions slow Somalia's economy

The IMF expects Somalia's growth to slow to 2.3% in 2026 and inflation to reach 6.5%, citing sharp foreign aid cuts since 2025, recurrent drought, Middle East war spillovers and evolving electoral dynamics. It calls near-term risks high and donor support critical.

Historic recognition

On 26 December 2025, Israel became the first country to formally recognise the Republic of Somaliland as an independent, sovereign state. PM Netanyahu, FM Gideon Sa'ar and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi ("Irro") signed a joint declaration, described as in the spirit of the Abraham Accords. Economy & tech

Israel turned a resource-poor economy into a high-tech hub: R&D spending around 6% of GDP (among the world's highest, per OECD), a startup ecosystem supported by the Israel Innovation Authority and the 1990s Yozma programme that seeded venture capital. Sources: OECD R&D data, Israel Innovation Authority.

Water & agriculture

In a dry climate, Israel pioneered modern drip irrigation (Netafim, 1965), reuses roughly 85–90% of its wastewater for farming, and gets a large share of drinking water from seawater desalination — lessons relevant to arid Somaliland. Sources: Israel Water Authority, Netafim, World Bank.

Institutions

A parliamentary democracy (Knesset), independent central bank (Bank of Israel), mandatory national service that builds technical skills, and strong universities (Technion, Weizmann Institute) linking research to industry. Sources: Knesset, Bank of Israel, Technion.

Tourism in Israel

Key destinations: Jerusalem's Old City, Tel Aviv, the Dead Sea, Galilee and Eilat. Check current travel advisories and visa rules before planning. Sources: Israel Ministry of Tourism, Gov.il visas.

Jobs & opportunities

Training and cooperation programmes: MASHAV (Israel's development agency) runs courses in agriculture, water and health for developing countries; scholarships via Israeli universities. Official job/work-permit info at gov.il. Sources: MASHAV, Population & Immigration Authority.

Beginner's guide for Somaliland readers

How Israel's democracy works

  • Knesset: a single 120-seat parliament that makes laws, approves the budget and can bring down the government.
  • Elections: citizens vote for a party list, not individual candidates. The whole country is one constituency; seats are shared proportionally among parties passing a 3.25% threshold. Elections are due every 4 years, often earlier.
  • Coalitions: no party has ever won 61 seats alone, so parties negotiate to form a majority coalition. The PM is usually the leader who can assemble it.
  • Prime Minister vs President: the PM heads the government and holds real power. The President (elected by the Knesset for one 7-year term) is a largely ceremonial head of state who formally asks a leader to form a government and can grant pardons.
  • Courts: an independent judiciary led by the Supreme Court, which also sits as the High Court of Justice and can review government actions. Israel has no single written constitution; "Basic Laws" serve that role.

How tourism works

  • Main sites: Jerusalem Old City (Western Wall, Al-Aqsa/Temple Mount, Church of the Holy Sepulchre), Tel Aviv beaches and Bauhaus "White City" (UNESCO), the Dead Sea and Masada (UNESCO), Galilee and Nazareth, Eilat on the Red Sea.
  • Entry basics: visa-exempt visitors must now get an electronic travel authorisation (ETA-IL) before flying; others apply for a visa through an Israeli embassy. Rules depend on your passport, so check official sources.
  • Seasons: spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) are mildest; summer is very hot, especially at the Dead Sea and Eilat.
  • How it's run: the Ministry of Tourism markets the country, licenses guides and hotels, and supports investment; licensed tour guides must pass a state course.

How the tech sector works

  • Startups: thousands of startups, many founded by small teams and sold to or funded by global firms; often called the "Start-up Nation".
  • Military-to-tech pipeline: mandatory service places talented young people in technology units (e.g. intelligence Unit 8200), where they gain skills and networks later used to found companies.
  • R&D: Israel spends roughly 6% of GDP on research and development, among the highest in the world; the state Innovation Authority co-funds risky projects, and university tech-transfer offices (Yissum, Yeda) commercialise research.
  • Water & agritech: drip irrigation, desalination and wastewater recycling grew into export industries, a model for dry countries.
